Affix a kosher mezuzah scroll at the main
doorways of your home. Obtain a kosher
mezuzah scroll from a reliable sofer (scribe)
or Jewish book store. Affix to the right-hand doorpost
(as you enter) of your doorways. Besides the main
doorways it is a mitzvah to affix a mezuzah to every
doorway in your home (excluding bathroom).
"And write (these words) on the
doorposts of your house and upon your gates." - Deuteronomy 6:9
The mezuzah is a reminder that all of man's possessions
belong to Hashem who, in His graciousness, granted them
to us. Since man's primary possession is his home, Hashem
commanded that a mezuzah be attached to every doorpost,
so that each time one enters and leaves a room he will recall
Hashem, to Whom all property belongs, and not be haughty
in our own wealth.
The Sefer HaChinuch says: the root of this mitzvah is to
remind man to trust in God every time he goes in or out of
his house.
The Torah requires that every doorway to our home have a
mezuzah. This is limited to doorways that lead into rooms
that measure at least 6 feet by 6 feet and have a doorpost
on the rightside, as you enter (which is where the mezuzah
is placed) and a lintel.
